President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to train 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), describing the programme as part of his administration’s drive to create jobs and strengthen the country’s electricity sector.
In a post on his official X page on Thursday, July 2, 2026, the President said job creation for young Nigerians remains a key pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to Tinubu, the initiative is designed to bridge Nigeria’s metering gap, eliminate estimated billing, protect electricity consumers and improve the performance of the nation’s power sector.
“Jobs for our young people remain central to our Renewed Hope Agenda,” the President wrote.
He explained that the programme, known as “The Power Force,” will provide participants with practical technical skills while connecting them to employment opportunities within the electricity industry.

“This programme is about jobs, skills, and dignity.
“It will equip young Nigerians with practical technical skills and connect them to real work in a sector that touches every home, every business, and every community in our country,” Tinubu said.
The President disclosed that the programme will be open to Nigerians who have completed their secondary school education, with a dedicated quota reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
He stressed that increasing the number of properly metered homes and businesses would improve transparency in electricity billing and enhance the financial sustainability of power distribution companies.
“When homes and businesses are properly metered, Nigerians can pay for what they actually use. When electricity distribution companies collect revenues more transparently and fairly, they are better able to reduce losses, maintain infrastructure, expand connections, and invest in better service,” he said.
According to Tinubu, the initiative will contribute to building a more efficient electricity market that benefits consumers, investors and the broader economy.
“This is how we build a power sector that is fairer to consumers, stronger for investors, and better able to deliver reliable electricity to the Nigerian people,” he added.
The President said he has directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and other relevant stakeholders to commence the programme within the next 30 days.
He encouraged eligible young Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity.
The application portal for the programme will open on July 4, 2026.
