[VIDEO] Xenophobia: ‘South Africa Is Not Safe’, Returnees Narrate Ordeal

A total of 271 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa have returned home, citing rising xenophobic attacks, insecurity, and harassment.

The returnees described living in constant fear as businesses were allegedly looted, homes attacked, and foreigners targeted by armed groups.

Some claimed they abandoned their shops and belongings to escape violence, while others alleged police extortion and inadequate protection despite valid documents.

The returnees appealed to the Nigerian government for financial assistance to rebuild their lives. Officials said the returnees would receive psychosocial care, dignity kits, profiling, skills training, and livelihood support as part of their reintegration.

Although some acknowledged having supportive South African friends, they said worsening hostility toward foreigners forced them to return to Nigeria, where they now hope to start afresh.
