Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has written to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, urging the Federal Government to revoke the contract for the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Road project over what he described as the poor performance of the contractor handling the project.
The project involves the expansion of the approximately 100-kilometre Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Road from a single carriageway to a dual carriageway to enhance transportation and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce from rural communities to major markets across neighbouring states.
In a leaked letter dated June 8, 2026, and personally signed by Senator Barau, the lawmaker expressed deep concern over the performance of CGC Nigeria Limited, the company awarded the contract.
The letter, which was received at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Works on the same day, noted that despite substantial budgetary allocations running into billions of naira, the contractor had failed to make satisfactory progress on the project.
Barau said the prolonged delay in the execution of the road project had continued to inflict hardship on residents, motorists and businesses operating along the corridor.
He stressed the strategic importance of the road to the economic development of Kano, Katsina and Kebbi states, arguing that the pace of work did not justify the huge public funds committed to the project.
According to the letter, “Given the strategic importance of the Kano–Dayi Road to the socio-economic development of Kano, Katsina and Kebbi States, it is deeply concerning that the contractor has failed to make satisfactory progress despite the allocation of N19 billion and N37 billion to the project under the 2025 and 2026 Appropriation Acts, respectively.”
The Deputy Senate President noted that the continued delays had adversely affected thousands of road users and communities that depend on the route for commercial and social activities.
“This persistent lack of progress has resulted in undue hardship for residents, commuters and other road users,” he stated.
Consequently, Barau called on the Ministry of Works to immediately evaluate the contractor’s performance and take decisive action in the public interest.
“In view of the persistent delays and the contractor’s apparent inability to meet expected project milestones, I urge the Ministry to undertake an immediate assessment of its performance and revoke the contract in the interest of the public,” the letter added.
The development is expected to intensify scrutiny of the execution of major federal road projects, particularly those that have received significant budgetary allocations but recorded limited progress.
Neither the Ministry of Works nor CGC Nigeria Limited had publicly responded to the contents of the letter as of the time of filing this report.
