The Senator representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has commenced the planting of 10,000 economic trees across communities in the senatorial district.
The initiative, tagged “Growing Kogi Central, Building Our Future,” is designed to improve environmental sustainability, empower rural households economically, combat climate change, and provide future generations with a healthier ecosystem.
The project features the planting of carefully selected economic tree species, including mangoes, guavas, neem, moringa, and oranges, trees chosen for their nutritional, medicinal, environmental and commercial value.
Speaking during the launch of the project, Senator Natasha emphasized that the programme goes beyond tree planting, describing it as an investment in the future of Kogi Central.
“A tree planted today is a promise fulfilled tomorrow. This initiative is not merely about planting seedlings; it is about planting hope, creating wealth, preserving our environment, and securing a greener future for generations yet unborn.”
The Senator noted that the project aligns with global efforts to address climate change while creating sustainable sources of income for families across the district.
“Environmental sustainability and economic prosperity must go hand in hand. Every tree we plant today contributes to cleaner air, healthier communities, food security, and economic opportunities for our people.”
She further urged residents, traditional institutions, youth groups, women, schools, and community organizations to take ownership of the trees after planting.
“Government alone cannot protect our environment. Every citizen has a responsibility to nurture these trees. Together, we can transform Kogi Central into a model of environmental excellence and sustainable development.”
Community leaders, youth volunteers, environmental advocates, and residents who witnessed the launch commended the Senator for initiating what many described as one of the most impactful environmental interventions in the district in recent years.
